Tom Monaghan - Mr Hendon

It is with great sadness that I have to inform members and friends of Hendon Golf Club of the passing of “Mr Hendon”, Tom Monaghan who passed away peacefully yesterday  morning (22nd January) in Ireland having travelled there over New Year to be with his family.

Tom was synonymous with everything good about Hendon Golf Club. He was the standard setter and the standard bearer, being the epitome of a good member, supporting many social functions, was a great Captain in 1987 and an outstanding Chairman between 1988 and 1994. In 2010 he once again took the helm of the Club to set about bringing it back to a financial even keel acting as unpaid General Manager and Treasurer.

Since he joined the Club some 40 years, ago Tom immersed himself into all aspects of the Club including chairing the Handicaps and Competitions Committee, was Chairman of the Club Trustees and for over 25 years helped run the North London Hospice Day raising many hundreds of thousands of pounds for that charity.

It is not surprising he earned the nickname of “Mr Hendon” and the Club were able to acknowledge a lifetime’s worth of his achievements by bestowing Honorary Life Membership upon him.

I am sure we all wish Margaret a happy, healthy and long life and look forward to welcoming her back.

Kind regards

Andrew Hoffbrand, Club Captain
